Introduction: What is Healing?

To understand what is healing, it is important to distinguish the difference between healing and cure.

Cure is the process of eliminating evidence of a physical illness or ending a medical condition.

The word heal can be traced back to the ancient word Proto-Germanic word khailaz, which means “to make whole” which means “to make whole”.

Healing is the holistic, transformational, and multiple-dimensional process of the whole being – body, mind, and soul. It is a process that takes time and rarely happens due to a singular intervention. While repairing and recovering the injured or distressed part of the body, healing works holistically and can have an effect on mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. In addition, it can also have an effect on the social, community, and environmental levels (2).

When someone who has been sick gets better, they are cured, not healed. Medical intervention may provide relief of the injury or cure disease but may not be sufficient to facilitate healing. Healing works on a much deeper level and restores our connections with imbalanced energy within us.

While medical tests can prove that illness is not present anymore, the healing process is individual and subjective, and cannot be measured. It is not linked to any outcome but is related to and/or a sense of wholeness.

As per Eastern Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Metaphysics, once healing occurs, it brings balance, and the person feels whole, different, and new. The success of the healing is directly linked to and dependent on individual participation, acceptance, and openness. The external factors can assist, but a healing process is always initiated and processed internally.

What is Energy Healing?

Energy healing is a type of holistic therapy that uses non-invasive methods to restore energy and balance in the body. It is practised to complement conventional medicine and is extensively researched as a complementary or alternative therapy. It has been adopted by many cultures worldwide and adapted for modern use.

The origin of energy healing has existed since the existence of all living beings. As we are all made of vibrational energy, all healings are energetic and vibrational in their nature.

“Everything in Life is Vibration” – Albert Einstein

How Does an Energetic Healing Work?

Meridians

Our body is composed of the vibrational energy and the energy fields and the electrical activities in the body is actually measurable. Current devices such as electrocardiogram (EKG) can measure energy around the heart or an electroencephalogram (EEG) around the brain. As per the Chinese medicine concept of qi, we can find a parallel between electrical current and the human system.

Through the healing process, the energy of the deepest connections gets transformed and restored, resulting in positive change, regardless of whether the disease is present.  By removing connections blocking the energy flow and restoring it to its natural (or in some cases to even higher) state, the body restores its ability to heal itself.

While some scientific studies concluded that is a possible placebo effect, the Reiki healing proved to improve wellbeing in animals and plants. The belief is required for the self-healing mechanism in any treatment including medical, but is not necessary for energy healing to work.

Energy Healing in the Ancient World

The healing power of energy has been known for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations believed that an energy force flowed through all living things called “ch.i” (or qi) that can be used to heal injuries and cure illnesses.

Traditional Chinese Medicine as it exists today has been practiced for around 4000 years, while Acupuncture originated in China about 5000 years ago! In ancient China, Daoists mastered the art of Qigong. Their philosophy was based on the holistic treatment of the patient and a life without disease.  By assessing energy flow in energy centers and meridians, the physician was trying to diagnose the problem. To restore and balance energy in the body so that healing can occur, the practitioner used various methods such as acupuncture, massage, medicinal herbs, reflexology, cupping glasses, reflexology, a diet, and many others.

Ancient Indian tradition, over 5000 years old, spoke about universal energy called Prana that gives life and constitutes all living beings. They practised yoga, breathing techniques, meditation, and physical exercises to bring energy in the body and the energetic field to achieve healing, balance, optimum health, and vitality.

Throughout history, many other teachings spoke about the Human Energy field (HEF) in detail and they use different techniques to bring balance and healing in the body, mind, and soul. Some others to mention are Tibetan, Indian, and Japanese Zen Buddhists, teachers in Metaphysics, Hindu Vedic, the native American Medicine People, and many others.

Energy Healing in the Modern World

“The cell is a machine driven by energy. It can thus be approached by studying matter, or by studying energy. In every culture and in every medical tradition before ours, healing was accomplished by moving energy.” Szent-Györgyi (1967) (1937 Nobel Prize winner for his discovery of vitamin C (3))

Even the knowledge of the human energy field and energetic healing was successfully practised for thousands of years, only in recent times, science and conventional Western medicine start recognizing its importance and began to integrate into the mainstream.

With the new scientific discoveries, new trends emerged.

There is a shift in the rapidly growing popularity of Complementary and Alternative Therapies and practices, which are being integrated into standard medical care around the world. Some of them are Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Reiki Healing, Biofield Therapy, Acupuncture, Reflexology, Myotherapy, Massage, Pilates, Yoga, etc. There is also growing practice of Meditation, Mindfulness, Breathing techniques, and EFT, also now implemented as part of the Mind-Body Medicine.

There is recent increased interest in Energy Medicine (EM) and its tools and modalities. Energy Medicine is a form of energy medicine that has been used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. It includes a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic:

  • Devices that are becoming increasingly popular worldwide and that is steadily entering mainstream medicine. Usage of the external pulsed electromagnetic field has been in use for many years mainly in imaging, diagnostic, pain management, and chronic inflammation.
  • Modalities such as Pulsed Electromagnetic field (PEMF) Therapy, Reiki, Polarity Therapy, Acupuncture, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, Homeopathy, Qi Gong, and Applied Kinesiology (3).

There is also an increasing trend in using these modalities and devices in the area of human performance required in high-level athletes and other performers.

The Science Behind Energy Healing

“The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.” – Nikola Tesla

After a long time being primarily focused on physiology, there has been in recent years a growing interest in the scientific and western medical research about universal and human energy fields (HEF), their relationships, and how these discoveries can be implemented in the medicine and healthcare system to support better diagnosis, treatments, performance and to improve general wellbeing.

Considering that universal energy and its principles and parameters work holistically and affect all aspects of our lives, some challenges to conducting these studies come up.

Up to today, there have been hundreds of scientific studies about the human energy field, mind-body connection, and how using different tools and healing modalities can improve the quality of life.

There is are even growing studies and scientifically documented papers that “factors, such as faith, prayer, and love, influence our recovery from illness. These partially understood modalities currently are spoken of in terms of ‘energy’, ‘healing energy’ or ‘subtle energy.”(4)

Energy Healing Is The Future of Health Car

Holistic

There is excited time coming and we are going to see more and more science accepting the fact that “the healing of a patient must include more than the biology and chemistry of their physical body; by necessity, it must include the mental, emotional, and spiritual (energetic) aspects. include the mental, emotional, and spiritual (energetic) aspects. EM is on the forefront of accepting this challenge.” (5) This will result in further studies and cross-over applications of the integrative therapies and acceptance in Western medicine and a better quality of healing and wellbeing.
